Double Bradfield Festival honour for school pupils

The annual Bradfield Festival of Music kicked off on Saturday 25 June, with a stellar international line-up. Each year, organisers collaborate with the Sheffield Music Hub to select two deserving Year 13 musicians to receive the highly coveted Young Musician of the Year awards.

In a first for King Edward VII School in Sheffield, this year sees both winners, Kaethe Uken (clarinet) and Ted Mitchell (flute) coming from their Year 13 music class.

Kaethe and Ted are long-standing members of advanced music groups run by the Sheffield Music Hub - the Sheffield Senior Schools Orchestra, the City of Sheffield Youth Festival Band (Kaethe) and Senior Flute Choir (Ted). They also both play in the highly acclaimed City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra which has played to audiences across Europe.

For both young musicians, this accolade marks the start of their musical journeys beyond school. Ted hopes to study music at either the University of Manchester or Newcastle University, and Kaethe has been awarded a scholarship to study Music Performance at the Birmingham Conservatoire from September. It is fitting that the Festival Patron, cellist Julian Lloyd-Webber is also Principal of the Conservatoire. Kaethe and Ted each played a solo piece and were presented their awards by the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Denise Fox at Saturday’s opening night.
