The fried chicken chain re-opened its branch near Sandall Park, Wheatley, yesterday for drive thru orders and deliveries only.

But hundreds of motorists rapidly descended on the branch, causing long queues on Thorne Road, with the tailback stretching back as far as Shaw Lane industrial estate and customers facing a wait of more than 90 minutes for food.

There were reports of ambulances from the nearby ambulance station in Clay Lane West having to drive in the opposite lane to bypass the queues as well as increased reports of littering around the area from discarded food packaging.

Now KFC has urged people to be sensible when using the restaurant in the Leger Retail Park.

A spokesman said: “We know it’s tempting, but please, please don’t all rush at once!

“Delivery remains the best way to get your fried chicken fix – we just want to offer a little more choice to those who are already on the road for essential journeys or on their way home from difficult shifts.”

“We’ve been working hard to responsibly reopen our restaurants and now we’re spreading our wings a little further. In line with government advice, we’ve decided to open the drive-thru lanes at 55 of our UK restaurants that are already open for delivery.””

“Nobody wants to be queuing unnecessarily. Despite what they say about us Brits. We don't really like the rain either, for that matter.”
