The authority closed all its cemeteries earlier in lockdown but after the Government announced at the weekend that graveyards could stay open, the council has now reversed its decision and unlocked the gates at the majority of the town’s cemeteries.

However, in accordance with the law, Rose Hill Crematorium and Cemetery will remain closed other than for funerals.

Many councils and authorities across the country had come under fire for closing parks and cemeteries, with relatives feeling it left them unable to pay their respects at a loved one’s grave.

Under the current lockdown rules the public can go outdoors, either in the city or in the countryside, to exercise, which includes running, cycling, walking, practising yoga and attending an allotment.

While police guidelines say exercising more than once a day is likely to be reasonable, it gives officers discretion in deciding whether repeated exercise on the same day "can be considered a 'reasonable excuse' for leaving home".
