Sanah Wilkinson, aged 28, of Wheatley, had already eaten part of Asda’s butternut squash, part of its vegetarian range, when she discovered a piece of meat which she believes was steak.

“I had it in my mouth and I knew straight away that it was meat from the texture. I had to spit it out in the bin. It made me feel physically sick. At one point, I thought I was going to be sick in the bin, but I wasn’t.

“At first I thought that it was just a new recipe, and maybe that it was a piece of tofu but as soon as I put it in my mouth I knew.

“The product is labelled as vegetarian lasagne as well, it’s not like it was just mislabelled. It was just one big piece of meat, my colleagues told me they thought it was steak, I can’t imagine how it got in there.”

Sanah had bought the ready meal from the Asda superstore on Gliwice Way, Bawtry Road, before going to work on Thursday June 9.

However, when she took a break from her role as office supervisor at Prestige Tax and Trust Services, Balby, she made the unappetising discovery.

Sanah, who has been a strict vegetarian for around 12 years, called the supermarket giant to complain, but was left unhappy with their response.

“They didn’t seem to understand why I was upset. They apologised and said if I took it back in store they would give me a double refund as a goodwill gesture, but I felt like they were trying to fob me off ,so I refused.

“I asked for them to take all the other products off the shelf as I don’t want this to happen to anybody else.

“They said it was an isolated incident, but I don’t know how they can be so sure.

“My mum always buys that ready meal for me if I go to visit as she knows it’s one of my favourites.

“However, I won’t be buying anything from their vegetarian range ever again.

“After the way they handled the whole complaint I am considering not shopping at Asda again at all, and I had shopped their quite a lot.”

Ms Wilkinson has also contacted trading standards and a solicitor and is waiting to hear back from them.

An Asda spokesperson said: “We expect the highest level of quality from our products and take all customer complaints seriously.

“We will be investigating this matter as soon as the product has been returned to store and would like to reassure our customers that we have received no other complaints of this nature.

“We remain in contact with Ms Wilkinson and have apologised for any upset caused by this matter.”
