Documents sealed for 61 years have revealed the UK’s UFO hotspots – with Doncaster among them.

Yorkshire had 15 sightings – and among them was an incident in Doncaster in July 2009, the last year the RAF stopped compiling records of UFO reports.

The incident in Doncaster was recorded at around 11.30pm on July 25, 2009 at an unspecified location in Doncaster.

The spotter reported seeing seven bright orange lights in a straight line. Only two lights were in view at any time.

“As the last two came a white moon ball flew over at double the speed of the orange lights,” the report said.

“Thirty minutes later six white balls in a triangle formation were seen.”

According to the documents, there were 626 UK 'sightings' in that year – with 54 in London alone.

The discoveries were reported by air traffic control employees, pilots, police officers and journalists.

Kent is second with 30 sightings in the same year, with Lancashire (24), Derbyshire (22) and Essex (22) making up the top five.

The midlands is a major hotspot with over 109 sightings as counties Warwickshire (17) and Lincolnshire (13) make the top 15 along with Derbyshire.

For years, the RAF was responsible for recording public reports and submitting them to the National Archives.

Eventually, the UFO wing of the RAF was shut down after defence bosses found no evidence of a 'potential threat'.

Since the department was closed down, there have been a number of other UFO reports in the skies above Doncaster.

In 2019, a UFO was reported above the Asda supermarket in Lakeside, while in the same year, Julie Marley watched a strange, silver, diamond shaped object for more than quarter of an hour from her garden in Askern.

In 2018, mysterious lights were spotted over the town by several residents.

However, perhaps Doncaster’s most famous UFO sighting is a photograph taken by Stephen Pratt in Conisbrough in 1966 which appears to show three flying saucers over the village.
