Doncaster’s Tourist Information Centre has been shortlisted in the ‘Visitor Information’ category of the White Rose Awards 2013.

This is the second tourism award for Doncaster Council this year.

In May the authority won Gold in the ‘Place Branding’ category of the prestigious national LGCommunications Reputation Awards 2013 for its work in re-branding the borough as a visitor destination.

The Doncaster Visitor Guide, the 10 day St Leger Festival Week and quirky PR stories were all part of the mix that helped Doncaster clinch the top prize as the best in Britain.

The annual White Rose Awards are run by Welcome to Yorkshire and recognise excellence in the region’s tourism sector. The ceremony takes place on Monday 11 November at New Dock Hall in Leeds. Previous shortlisted candidates from Doncaster include the Yorkshire Wildlife Park and the Mount Pleasant Hotel, who went on to win gold.

There are around 40 tourist information centres across the county, the other finalists are: Aysgarth, Bridlington, Humber Bridge, Ilkley and Reeth.

Councillor Bob Johnson, Cabinet Member for Tourism, said: “It is always great to be shortlisted for awards and I am delighted that our centre has been recognised as one of the best in the region. Good luck to the team at the awards in November.”

The Doncaster TIC welcomes visitors from all over the world – last year around 89,000 visited the Blue Building on Doncaster’s High Street, where the TIC is located. In addition to local gifts and souvenirs, visitors can also book coach travel or buy tickets for popular events.

The Tourist Information Centre also runs the very popular Guided Heritage Walks, which have promoted Doncaster’s rich history and architecture to well over 1,000 customers since they started. The TIC can be contacted on 01302 734309 and is open Monday to Saturday. For more information go to and
