Doncaster Toll Bar make winning start in new league

Doncaster Toll Bar got their Yorkshire Amateur Rugby League Premier Division campaign off to a winning start with a 34-20 victory at York Acorn.

The visitors were slow out of the blocks and trailed 10-0 after 15 minutes.

To add to their problems they had Pete Green sin-binned but that seemed to jolt them into action and two quickly-taken tries by Alex Palmer and Shaun Roberts edged them into a 12-10 lead.

Despite having had centre Gaz Carey sent off for punching just before the break, a brace by Dean Roberts and a second from Shaun Roberts, saw Toll Bar lead 28-10 midway through the second half.

Shaun Carey later rounded off an excellent move down the right.

“We came away from the game with mixed emotions,” said coach Ian Tattersall.

“We didn’t play that well but we picked up a win away from home despite having to play 55 minutes of the match with 12 men - which made things more difficult - so it was a good result.

“Some of our play was really good but discipline was an issue and we need to address that and make sure we start the next match a lot better.

“All the lads stood up under difficult circumstances.

“Hooker Jono Burns, who was our man of the match, was excellent. He’s come in from Sheffield reserves and has fitted in really well.

“Karl Mills was a real threat and both Shaun and Dean Roberts showed some real quality in attack.”
