Doncaster school ordered to improve by Ofsted

A Doncaster school has been told it must improve after its latest inspection.

Carcroft Primary School, which recently celebrated its 100th anniversary, was rated as requiring improvement, after Ofsted found teaching and learning inconsistent and variable in years five and six, and progress was not good enough.

A few pupils were not motivated to learn, and a lack of a challenge contributed to some disruptive behaviour. There were concerns over the achievement of disadvantaged pupils, and attendance levels.

Pupils were not well prepared for the increased demands of secondary school.

But provision for the school’s youngest pupils was ‘outstanding’. And leaders understood what needed doing. Teaching in years one to four, had improved since the last inspection for where pupils made good progress.

Most pupils were well behaved and keen to learn.

Headteacher Ruth Willis said: “We are disappointed with the Ofsted rating, but it is also very important to point out the improvements that are being made at Carcroft Primary. Ofsted rated our early years education as outstanding, while teaching is considered good for years one to four.

“We know there is work to be done to improve standards for years five and six, but we take encouragement from the improvements that were recognised in the report.”
