Doncaster’s new £22 million theatre is set to step into the limelight tonight as the curtain goes up on Cast.

The state of the art building, which replaces Doncaster Civic Theatre, will open in a spectacular blaze of glory with a live outdoor spectacular from 6pm in Sir Nigel Gresley Square, followed by the opening night of the venue’s first ever production, comedy musical drama The Glee Club which gets under way at 8pm.

And executive director Kully Thiarai, who has been busy putting the finishing touches to the Cast Of Thousands launch is looking forward to kick starting a new era for the town.

She said: “There has been lots to sort out, but we are there and feeling very positive and we’re looking forward to getting started now.”

The building, which forms the centrepiece of Doncaster’s £300 million Civic and Cultural Quarter will be unveiled with an all-singing, all-dancing musical extravaganza “packed with surprises,” according to Ms Thiarai and is free to the public.

The building, which boasts a 600 seat main auditorium as well as other performance spaces, will also be opened up to the public across the weekend to allow people to take a peek inside as well as check out an opening programme which includes Pop Idol star Gareth Gates, folk sensation Kate Rusby and comedians Russell Kane and Norman Lovett over the coming months.

Ms Thiarai “We want people to come along and get a flavour of what Cast is all about. Its going to be a celebration for us and a celebration of Doncaster.”

She also hit back at critics of the venue’s programme with some branding the line-up a radical departure from the acts that played the civic and too high-brow for Doncaster’s tastes.

She said: “There is a very broad range of acts on offer with something for everyone.

“We are happy to have conversations with any acts who want to work with us and we have an open book of the kind of things we can present.”

No tickets are needed for the Cast Of Thousands event, but tickets for The Glee Club and all other productions are available at
