Doncaster’s Bistro couple call it a day

Two of Doncaster’s longest serving restaurateurs have hung up their aprons bidding farewell to their popular eaterie.

Carol and Deniz Moullali opened Le Bistro in Bradford Row in 1972 and have enjoyed more than 40 years of success with the town’s longest-running restaurant.

The couple have had a constant presence in Doncaster’s ever-changing night life and over the years have fed many famous faces at their venue including Oliver Reed, Barry McGuigan, Arthur Scargill, Paul Gascoigne and Coronation Street’s Thelma Barlow.

Deniz, 65, says they have enjoyed their time at Le Bistro, but have decided to ‘end on a high’ and are looking to explore other parts of the restaurant business, possibly with a view to opening a gastro pub.

“It’s a hard business, but one we’ve enjoyed being a part of,” said Deniz.

“Over the years we have catered for every event. Engagement parties, weddings, funerals. You name it, we’ve done it.”

Deniz and Carol’s restaurant has undergone a few transformations and a change in location.

It moved from its original location in Bradford Row to its familiar spot in East Laith Gate in the early 1980s. Several years ago the venue underwent a refurbishment changing its name to The Local.

But one thing that remained the same was the couple’s dedication to bringing fine dining to Doncaster, with plenty of delectable dishes on the menu including the popular culinary treat of parmo - deep-fried pork in breadcrumbs - that hails from the couple’s Middlesbrough roots.

Carol says she will definitely miss the business, which has been such a big part of their lives for so long.

The 62-year-old added: “We want to thank all of our customers who have been so loyal to us over the last 40 years. We’ve made a lot of good friends through the business, and I can honestly say I enjoyed every minute of it.

“I’ll also miss the many members of staff, some of who have been with us for over 20 years.”

The premises have now been handed over to a new owner, who plans to turn it into an Indian restaurant.

The couple have passed the other arm of their business, Relish, on to their son Paul Moullali, and his wife Rebecca.
