The on-loan Sunderland forward has started the last three games just in behind top scorer Andy Williams but has not yet found the net.

His place could come under threat from Nathan Tyson and Liam Mandeville for this weekend’s big home clash with Sheffield United.

But the United States U20s international is convinced the best is still to come from him.

“The fans here have not see the best of me yet,” said Gooch, 20.

“Once I get to know the other players, which I have now, and get to know the system better, I think you’ll see a lot more from me in terms of scoring goals and getting shots off.

“I’d say my best position is just behind the main striker, where I can pick the balls up and just drive.

“I like to get the ball to feet and turn and get at defenders and cause them problems. That’s what I hope to do a lot more of.

“I thought in my first two games my performance was a bit better. Against Walsall I was in and out of the game, so that was a bit frustrating.

“It’s been good though, I’m glad to get a run of games.

“I was out for over a month with groin and hamstring problems so it’s good to get some minutes under my belt without any problems.”

Gooch is one of three young Premier League players currently on loan at Rovers.

“There’s a young core here, which is what you want, you want a lot of energy and enthusiasm,” he said.

“They’ve helped me settle in, especially Conor Grant. Eddy [Lecygne] has a similar background to me too.

“I’ve played against them for years so it’s kind of funny that we’re teammates now. It’s been good.”
