Doncaster Rovers: Why several players '˜won't train again this season'

Darren Ferguson revealed several members of his Doncaster Rovers squad will not take part in full training again this season as he bids to get them through their intensive final three weeks of the campaign.

Rovers face six games in 19 days starting on Tuesday against Bury.

Ferguson admits a number of his players are carrying injuries, including John Marquis, who scored a brace in Saturday’s come-from-behind win over MK Dons, with the striker struggling with a hamstring problem.

And the Rovers boss says he will carefully manage those effected through the busy period.

“I would say there’s a handful of them that won’t do any more training,” Ferguson told The Star.

“We’ll just roll them out for games.

“What I mean by that is they won’t be out on the training pitch. They’ll do swimming, cycling.

“I’ve got to be careful. I can’t afford injuries and them missing part of the season next year, or pre-season.

“I have to go game by game and assess it.

“Certainly Joe Wright, Matty Blair and Luke McCullough, I don’t think they will be available for Tuesday.”

Blair was withdrawn early in the first half at stadium:mk on Saturday with a suspected concussion while Wright rolled his ankle in the second period.

Marquis insisted after Saturday’s game that he would be fit to face Bury but said the decision will lie with his manager.

And Ferguson was full of praise for the striker’s performance in spite of his injury concerns.

He said: “What a performance that was because he shouldn’t be playing.

“There’s three of them that were out there that shouldn’t be playing.

“The hamstring is hanging off John and so it is with Tommy Rowe.

“I keep churning them out there but I’ve got to be careful, obviously, because I don’t want injuries.

“John’s performance was outstanding.”
