McCann picked the striker out as the top trainer at the club since the start of the season and says he is pushing hard for a starting berth.

And he admitted May has been unfortunate to have players in form already in the side in his position.

'He's brilliant,' McCann told the Free Press.

'For the past month Alfie has probably been the best trainer on the training ground.

'He's been outstanding. He wants to do extra. We're working with him. His finishing was top drawer.

'He's going to have a big future Alfie May.

'Unfortunately for him at the minute he's got John Marquis and Mallik Wilks playing well and he's got a fight on his hands.

May has started just one league game so far this term with another start coming in the Carabao Cup.

He has impressed off the bench in recent weeks, adding pace towards the end of games.

And McCann has praised his attitude as he searches for opportunities.

'Alfie every day comes in with a smile on his face,' he said.

'He doesn't sulk. His demeanour is great.

'As a manager that's exactly what you want.

'You don't want people sulking around the training ground and not wanting to work because they feel that you've got a problem with them.

'That's the not the case.

'It's the case that the team is dong well at the minute and everyone has got to fight.'
