Rovers ended their winless run at five matches with their 3-2 triumph at the Abbey Stadium, returning to the confident, possession football which has helped them to the top of League Two.

Results on Tuesday night saw Rovers open up a six point lead at the top of the table and a 12 point lead over fourth placed Portsmouth.

“I’m delighted to get back to winning ways,” Ferguson said.

“We had a good meeting with the players on Monday and what I tried to do with them was, rather than looking at it as we haven’t won in five, it was we’ve only lost two in 20. That’s now two in 21. That is what you’ve got to look at.

“We’re bang on target points-wise. We’re scoring goals. We want to win games.

“We should have had more points in the last six games.

“But the gap hasn’t decreased and all the others did not win. That doesn’t matter. Our job is simple - if we keep doing our job, that’s all that matters. I felt the players were very good. It was a good team performance with very good football and I enjoyed watching it.”

Goals from Tommy Rowe and Mathieu Baudry plus a John Marquis penalty put Rovers in a commanding lead before a late rally from Cambridge who netted through George Maris and Luke Berry.

Ferguson said: “It would have been a travesty if we’d have not won that game. I thought we were outstanding.

“I’m delighted with the players.”
