Doncaster Rovers: There's plenty more to come from myself, says Joe Wright

Joe Wright has not taken very long to make a good impression.

The 21-year-old centre back earned the man of the match award on his debut against Nottingham Forest during the week, following an injury plagued pre-season.

Wright admitted before today’s clash with Crawley Town that he is still slightly aggravated by the toe injury that forced him off in the friendly against Newcastle United. He also missed the last two months of last season with a knee injury.

And he has promised there is a lot more to come from him as he builds his match sharpness and also adapts to Rovers’ 3-5-2 system.

“Pre-season didn’t go to plan. I’ve still got a little niggle with it [the toe] but it’s something I can manage,” Wright told The Star.

He added: “It’s always nice to play well but there’s still plenty more to come from myself.

“It’s a new system that we’re playing so I’m learning off Butts [Andy Butler] and all the experienced players in the team.

“For myself it’s about getting games, staying grounded when you do well and not beating yourself up when you do not so well.”

Wright started on the right-side of a back three against Forest before switching to the central role for the second half.

For many fans the jury may still be out on the system, but Wright says he is a fan.

“I’ve enjoy it in a three, whether that’s in the middle or on the right,” said the Wales under-21 international.

“You get a lot more of the ball which I enjoy. It puts a bit of pressure on you, you’ve got to organise well, but I think we’ve done a lot better, especially in the last game.

“I enjoy it, I think it’s a good formation.”

Wright fully expects Crawley to make life difficult for Rovers today and get men behind the ball.

“We’re a big scalp in this division so we’ve got to be patient ourselves,” he said.

“Teams will probably sit off us more than what they would do against other teams so we’ve got to be patient in our play, try not to get frustrated and stick to the game plan,” he said.

“We’ve got to build some momentum. We need to turn the performances, which have been good so far, into results.

“I’m sure once we get one result we’ll start to build from there.”
