Two of those were potential loan signings.

The club’s priority though is to move on transfer-listed trio Thorsten Stuckmann, Dany N’Guessan and Billy Whitehouse.

“We’re talking to three players at the moment. Two loans,” chief executive Gavin Baldwin told BBC Radio Sheffield earlier this week.

“We’re waiting for Premier League clubs to name their 25-man squads, which will make those conversations a lot easier. So I would doubt very much whether anyone comes in over the next few days because we’re waiting on other clubs.

“We have got a priority at the moment that we would want two or three out.

“However, the way the board have worked is that it’s not one in and one out at the moment. If there is a player that will enhance our chances of promotion, and is affordable, then we’ll go and get that player and back ourselves to balance the books through players out.”

Former loan star Keshi Anderson remains a target.

“Keshi’s on that list,” said Baldwin.

“But what Darren wants to do is make sure that it’s a player that fits the philosophy he wants to play.

“We’ve probably got a list of six players that he’s actively interested in. He’ll narrow that down and then we’ll go and have a conversation with the clubs.

“It’s no secret everyone at the club thinks the world of Keshi. We’ve got to monitor with Crystal Palace his fitness, because he had a significant injury when he was here, how his pre-season is going, and whether Palace are willing to let him out on that basis.”
