Rovers have secured the services of a young forward ahead of next season, following up from their capture of Tom Anderson on a permanent deal from Burnley.

While the identity of the player remains under wraps, the Free Press understands the youngster is seen as one for the future – in the same mould as Alfie Beestin when he joined from Tadcaster Albion in 2016.

The new signing is understood to operate either in wide areas or behind the strikers and is blessed with plenty of pace. He missed a stretch of game time last season due to an ankle injury.

Contractual obligations prevent Rovers from making the announcement of the signing – just as it did last summer with the deal for Danny Andrew – and it is unlikely to be confirmed until late June.

Meanwhile, Rovers remain confident they will come to an agreement with veteran skipper James Coppinger over a new contract.

The club have made an offer to the 37-year-old and believe talks over a new deal are progressing well so far.

Defender Anderson has signed a two-year deal at the Keepmoat following his successful loan spell.
