Doncaster Rovers: Rowe backs Ferguson to bring out his best again
In times of trouble the old adage says go with what you know.
Rowe joined on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers last Saturday and came off the bench in the agonising injury time defeat to Peterborough United, the club where his relationship with Ferguson began.
Signed towards the end of Ferguson’s first spell as Posh boss, Rowe was made club captain after the Scot returned to the helm.
And the 26-year-old says his relationship with Ferguson was his primary motivation for going in at the deep end with struggling Rovers – he went with what he knew also.
“The main reason was knowing the gaffer so well,” Rowe said.
“I enjoyed every minute of it at Peterborough with him and it was a long time as well, five years when I was a young lad.
“I grew up as a footballer with him and it worked really well.
“All managers, good or bad, shape you into the player you are.
“It was a time in my career when I needed to push on and he brought the best out in me which I’m sure quite a few others would say.
“At this stage, I want to push on again and show people I can still go.”
Rowe will be pushing for his first start this afternoon as Rovers visit bottom side Colchester United, the first part of a vital Easter double-header which will see Blackpool come to the Keepmoat on Monday.
Blackpool are a point ahead of Rovers, who occupy the final relegation place, but have played a game more.
Rowe labelled Rovers’ current league position as false given the make up of the squad.
He said: “I look at the size of the club and the position they are in which is false when you look at the team
“But you have these seasons sometimes and by no means is it done.
“There’s a lot of good players and a lot of quality that I was very keen to come and get involved with.
“The results are most important now. You can talk about belief all day, but we must get these results.
“I do think it will change. The key is to go in right to these two big games.
“Colchester is going to be a very tough game, we know all about them and we will be ready.”
