Mason missed the 4-0 win at Bristol Rovers with boss Grant McCann revealing afterwards he had damaged his toe during the FA Cup triumph against Charlton Athletic the previous weekend.

McCann revealed there had been fears the 21-year-old would require surgery and miss several months but those concerns were quickly allayed.

'Niall felt something in his toe in the Charlton game,' McCann said.

'But he trained on Tuesday and came out again on Thursday but went back in.

'We sent him for a scan and an x-ray and he's going to be missing, I think, for the best part of a month.

'We've been a touch lucky with Niall. It might be a month to six weeks but it could have been four months to six months if he'd needed an operation.

'We were all crossing our fingers last night for the news and we're delighted it's not going to be too long.

'It's disappointing for us but it's the reason why we brought Shaun Cummings to the club.'

McCann said the injury was a complicated one and that Rovers had dodged a bullet with Mason not requiring surgery to correct the issue.

'He's got a rupture in his big toe where it joins the foot,' he said.

'It's a complicated one really.

'Niall thought it was a kick and he's played on the whole game with it.

'I've seen these injuries in my management career already. Callum Elder had the same injury and he needed to get an operation".

"But we're delighted Niall won't."
