Alex Dalton, physiotherapist for Doncaster Rovers, has worked with leading independent pharmacy, Weldricks, to trial a new device designed to temporarily relieve muscle aches and injuries on contact.
Created by a physician, VibraCool® delivers two physiologic pain relievers – high frequency vibration and ice – which, when combined, help to fight pain when placed on the injured area.
Explains Alex: “Vibration can help to massage muscles and improve blood flow and ice is well known for reducing swelling and inflammation.
“There are two different sizes of VibraCool® pack: one for treating knees and ankles, the other smaller pack for wrists and elbows. Each pack is relatively compact making them a good choice for the treatment of any localised injuries to these specific parts of the body. We trialled the larger pack on several of the players who got knocks to their ankles and it offered a good degree of compression for a small area.
Continues Alex: “I think it’s a great product for individuals who regularly take part in a variety of sports including runners, tennis players, triathletes or even for people who like walking and perhaps have had problems with weak ankles in the past. It’s very easy for anyone, even if they’re not playing sport, to slip and twist their ankle - VibraCool® would certainly be of benefit in those circumstances.
“At the same time, any athlete wanting to prevent delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) after a training session or race may well wish to try the product and assess its efficacy.”
Concludes Richard Wells, superintendent pharmacist for Weldricks: “It’s great to work with Alex and his players to trial such products as it gives us very valuable feedback for our customers.
“As a reusable pain device, from aches and injuries to athletic training, VibraCool® is a viable drug-free pain reliever. The fact that it can be worn during low impact activity is also a big plus point.”
