Doncaster Rovers: Patient approach with Rob Jones return

Rob Jones will not be rushed back to first team action despite Andy Butler's injury, Darren Ferguson has said.

Butler suffered groin and ligament damage during the draw with Gillingham earlier this month and is expected to be out for at least another fortnight.

But Rovers will take the patient approach with the recovery of Jones – who has not played since late September.

Jones suffered a hamstring strain in the 2-2 draw but reoccurring problems with his neck and head have kept him out of training.

The nature of the 35-year-old’s issues means Rovers will take the patient approach with his return to action, according to Ferguson.

“We just have to make sure we’re a bit patient and go off his guidelines because of the nature of the injury,” Ferguson told The Star.

“We’ve got to be sensible with that but he’s experienced so we’re in good hands.”

After returning to full training on Monday, Jones had been due to feature for his own Rovers U21 side at Grimsby Town earlier this week but sat the game out.

Ferguson admitted he is looking forward to having Jones back in the first team set up, when he returns to fitness.

He said: “We know what Rob brings. He has vast experience, he’s another left footer.

“He’s gradually getting there.”

Ferguson will take the same patient approach when it comes to the recovery of Cameron Stewart following his horrendous fall on his neck in the draw with Gillingham earlier this month.

The Rovers boss says he will be guided by the winger with his recovery.
