Both first choice centre halves Butler and Joe Wright went into Saturday's game with Rochdale on four bookings.

Wright received an early yellow card meaning he will miss this weekend's clash with Gillingham at the Keepmoat.

Had Butler suffered the same fate, it would have left Rovers with Tom Anderson as the only recognised senior centre back available for the visits of the Gills.

But McCann held his nerve and left Butler on the pitch for the full game, focused only on securing the win over Rochdale.

"I think that game was more important," McCann said.

"Rochdale was the game that we were here to win.

"We've done that and we can now look forward to the Gillingham game.

"If we start getting ahead of ourselves and think we can lose Buts for next week, the you can lose focus and concede.

"I was pleased with Buts today because he'll tell you himself that he was disappointed with his last two performances."

Anderson is set to come in to partner Butler in defence against Gillingham.

Herbie Kane will return for the game after serving a one-match suspension due to picking up five bookings.

Niall Mason also moved onto four league yellow cards after being booked against Rochdale.
