But the Northern Ireland international insists the group still believe they can upset League One leaders Wigan Athletic today and keep their survival hopes alive.

“It’s been really difficult and it’s been a bit of a shock to everyone really,” said McCullough, reflecting on the club’s 17-game sequence without a win.

“Nobody ever expected this to happen.

“It’s happened all of a sudden but we’re here now and you’ve just got to keep on going through the hard times and good times. You get both as a footballer and you have to keep doing what you believe is right.

“I can’t put my finger on just one thing as to why it’s happened,” he added.

“At the end of the day we haven’t performed well enough.

“It’s the simple facts - we haven’t done our jobs in both boxes. We haven’t been good enough defensively and we haven’t been good enough in the attacking box.

“All in all I think the players haven’t performed as well as we could have and should have.”

In stark contrast to Rovers, Wigan have soared to the top of the table on the back of a sensational 20-game unbeaten run.

“If we can beat Wigan it would definitely give us belief we can go and win the rest of our games,” said McCullough.

“We’re all hurting but there’s a still a belief among us going into games that we can win them. I think we’ve shown that in the last few games.

“Wigan are up in there in the league obviously but we still believe we can get a result. We have to go out and try and win the game. We’ve got nothing to lose really.”
