Danny Andrew is set for his first competitive minutes since August next week as he steps up his recovery from a cruciate ligament injury.

And there is a possibility he could be ready for first team action before the end of the season.

After a bright first month with Rovers, left back Andrew suffered the injury early in the 2-0 defeat to AFC Wimbledon but remarkably managed to finish the game.

He has been sidelined evert since and was expected to miss the remainder of the current campaign.

But after an impressive recovery, he is set to play 45 minutes for Rovers’ U23 side at Mansfield Town next Tuesday.

“Danny is training very, very well,” boss Darren Ferguson told The Star.

“He’s training with us most days now.

“We’re hoping he will get 45 minutes into him next Tuesday. The U23s are at Mansfield before our game with Bury.

“We’ll take it from there with Danny but he’s looking very good.

“Whether we get him a game with the first team will purely depend on how he comes through these games.

“He’ll have to do 45 minutes, then an hour. I think the U23s have got a game the day of the Blackburn game as well.

“If he got through those two no problem, we’d only have three games left after that.

“Then we’d have to come to a decision of whether to give him some part in one of those.”

Ferguson admits having Andrew play some role before the end of the season would be a considerable boost given he was not expected to feature.

And he believes the 27-year-old would have the perfect set up for summer and pre-season in that scenario.

He said: “If we can get one game or half a game or an hour, it’ll give him that confidence going into next season.

“That is very much in my thoughts.”
