The 26-year-old striker has netted seven goals in 11 games this term and wants to finish the season as League One's top scorer.

Rovers rejected bids from Peterborough United and Aberdeen for Marquis over the summer but could face another battle to hold onto the former Millwall frontman in January.

Ahead of what will be his 100th league appearance for Rovers at Plymouth Argyle this weekend, Marquis said: 'Obviously I'm very ambitious and I always have been.

'I've played in the Championship when I was younger and probably, in fairness, wasn't ready.

'I wasn't good enough to be a regular at that level whereas now I feel like I'm good enough and if given the chance to play in the Championship I'd thrive.

'My ideal situation is to get promoted with Doncaster this season and that be that.

'But my aim is to play as high as I can. I think that's every player's ambition.

'As long as I'm scoring goals, that's my job. Anything else after that we'll just see where it takes me.'

Marquis's brace in the win over Bradford City last weekend, a third straight victory for Grant McCann's side, took his Rovers goal tally to 48 in 110 appearances.

'The manager has high standards and I think he knows me well enough now to know that I'm similar,' said Marquis.

'I wasn't happy with scoring two at the weekend because I think I should've got a third.

'If I had three I would've liked to have got a fourth.

'I always want to do a bit better than I can.

'The gaffer's said to me ones are good for my goal tally but if you can get a two or three it boosts your total quite quickly.

'We've set out aims and I'd like to be the top scorer in the league this season.

'I'm one behind at the moment so I need to hopefully keep scoring goals at a good rate this season and see that where it takes me.'
