Doncaster Rovers: Joe Wright edging closer to return

Grant McCann is hopeful that Joe Wright will make his first team return for Doncaster Rovers before the end of the year.

Wright has been out of action with an ankle injury for the last five weeks after a freak training ground clash with Andy Butler.

The 23-year-old has recently commenced fitness training back on the grass at Cantley Park and boss McCann is confident he will be able to rejoin the full group in the near future.

'Joe has been back on the grass doing some running,' McCann said.

'I'm not sure on the timescale but we're hoping he'll play some part in December, which is good news for us.

'We don't know when or what game.

'He's missed the last five weeks so he's going to need to build on his fitness a bit before he's fully fit.

'We're pleased he's back on the grass and running.'

Wright was initially expected to be out for the remainder of 2018 but has made good progress.

The defender spoke of a desire to use his time on the sidelines to work on his size and strength and McCann says he is already showing the benefits.

He said: 'Joe's been working in the gym for the last five weeks. He looks good physically but we just need to get him fit now.'

Will Longbottom is Rovers' only other injury concern currently.
