The 25-year-old scored both goals '“ a superb curling effort and a penalty '“ in Tuesday night's comfortable 2-0 win over Grimsby Town in the Checkatrade Trophy.

His first ever brace for Rovers also came off the back of several lively cameos from the bench and could earn him a start at Rochdale on Saturday.

'It was nice to get on the scoresheet. I think it's the first time I've scored two in a Rovers shirt,' said May.

'The first one was lovely. It's probably the best goal I've ever scored.

'It's the new groin that I've got!

'I had a bad groin last year and we've worked really hard on it with the physio and it's doing really well at the moment.

'It's better than my right foot at the minute!

'After I scored I shouted at Tom Anderson '˜It's the new groin!''

'I think I could've scored more,' he added.

'I'm disappointed I didn't come off the pitch with the match ball but I'm still really pleased to get two goals.'

May is currrently fourth in line behind John Marquis, Mallik Wilks and James Coppinger but is now breathing down their necks '“ although he insists he will remain upbeat if he is back on the bench this weekend.

'I said to myself tonight is the night to try and put myself in that starting eleven for Saturday and give the gaffer a headache,' said May.

'Obviously it's up to the gaffer what team he picks.

'You can't really be disappointed because the front three have been phenomenal

'I've just got to keep the same mindset and if I'm on the bench hopefully come on and try and do my best to get a goal or win the game.'

He added: 'I said to a few of the lads I think we owed a performance to the gaffer.

'He obviously changed it around for the Blackpool game [in the Carabao Cup] and we also lost to Mansfield Town here in a development game.

'I think that was a performance that we all really wanted to give and I think that showed with the clean sheet and coming off with the points.'
