Doncaster Rovers: It's a case of show and tell for Ferguson as he bids to get his side firing again

That is the message Darren Ferguson has given his Doncaster Rovers squad as he aims to get them firing in front of goal, starting against AFC Wimbledon tonight.

Rovers failed to muster a single shot on target in Saturday’s goalless draw at Oldham Athletic, with ponderous play in the final third costing them dearly.

With little time between games and a necessity to focus on player recovery rather than training ground work, Ferguson has been forced to simply show his players what they have been doing wrong.

“We can’t do it physically so we show them on the videos,” Ferguson told The Star.

“But you’ve got to be careful as a manager sometimes with what you show them because you can show them too many negatives and that can have a bad effect.

“Generally on a Monday we go through the stuff we should be doing better. And what we’re wanting to do in the game.

“We always end up with this is how they did it well and what you need to go onto in the next game.

“They see all the clips that we put together for them.

“These meetings are very important because it’s not about being over critical with them.

“They understand it’s more about what they learn from the game and what we have to take into the next one.

“There’s always a learning attitude that we’re having.

Ferguson felt the mistakes made in the final third were simple to rectify.

“We didn’t get enough shots off and the final pass wasn’t right,” he said. “We worked the ball into very good positions in the last third but the final bit wasn’t there.

“That was disappointing and the players know that.”

Tonight’s visitors to the Keepmoat need just one point to be sure of League One safety and head to town unbeaten in their last five matches.

Ferguson has no fresh injury worries for the game though says he will likely freshen his team up once again following Rovers’ hectic concluding weeks of the season.

James Coppinger may come into the side, although Ferguson may opt to rest him further ahead of Saturday’s final day showdown with promotion Wigan Athletic.
