Doncaster Rovers: I'd have been sacked if the board weren't sure about me insists Ferguson

Darren Ferguson believes he would have been sacked if the Doncaster Rovers board did not believe they had appointed the right man for the job.

Ferguson offered his gratitude to the Rovers hierarchy for the backing he has received since his appointment in October.

And he is confident his employers still believe in him despite the club’s relegation to League Two last season.

“The board been very supportive and I don’t think it was a case of them thinking they’d got no choice because they only appointed me in October,” he told The Star.

“I really do think these are really astute business people and if they thought they’d got the wrong man they would have got rid.”

Ferguson admits he did feel some pressure during the 17 match winless run but continued to believe he could drag Rovers out of the mire and that he was the right man to take the club forward.

He said: “In terms of doubting myself, you have to make sure you stay strong mentally and keep the belief.

“Without it bordering on anything else, you’ve got to keep the belief.

“When you go through a run like that, you have to try not to feel any pressure because you have to focus on your job.

“If you start losing belief in yourself, the players will see right through it.

“It’s important I kept that for them.”

Goalkeeper Marko Marosi last night signed a one-year contract extension.

Marosi will compete with new signing Ross Etheridge for a starting berth after Thorsten Stuckmann was told to find a new club.

Rovers will play Premier League newcomers Middlesbrough in a friendly at the Keepmoat on July 16.
