Gavin Strachan has left his role as assistant manager of Doncaster Rovers with immediate effect following the appointment of Grant McCann as boss.

The news comes as somewhat of a surprise given the Rovers hierarchy were keen to retain Strachan and the rest of the backroom staff following Darren Ferguson’s decision to resign as manager earlier this month.

It is understood prospective candidates to replace Ferguson were instructed that working alongside the existing staff was a criteria of the job.

Strachan arrived at Rovers shortly after Ferguson’s appointment in October 2015.

Issuing a statement on his departure, Strachan said: “The players have been brilliant, the buy in from the senior professionals was vital and they made my job easier with their attitude.

“The level of support we’ve had over the years has been overriding, that relationship between the staff, the players and the fans is back again and that gives me a real sense of pride,” he added.

“From the time we went down into League Two, even at that point, the fans were so supportive over the years, and I have nothing but thanks to them really.

“Looking back I am really proud to have played a part, I have worked with some fantastic individuals ranging from the players, people at the stadium and the wonderful staff at Cantley Park.”
