Rovers made hard-working frontman John Marquis their seventh summer signing earlier this week.

But Ferguson has confirmed he is hoping to further bolster his forward power in the loan market.

The Scot revealed at the end of last season he was hopeful of bringing Crystal Palace’s Keshi Anderson back to the Keepmoat Stadium.

Ferguson said this week: “I’ve got good options [with Andy Williams, Gary McSheffrey, John Marquis and Liam Mandeville].

“We’re possibly looking to get one in on loan – a quicker one, a striker – to give us a little more pace up there.

“But that’s something we can concentrate on probably after pre-season has started.”

Meanwhile, former Millwall man Marquis, Ferguson believes, is someone Rovers fans will take to immediately.

“He’s a different type of striker who’s got good experience for a 24-year-old,” said Rovers’ boss.

“He’s played a lot in the Championship, in League One and obviously last season was pivotal to helping Northampton get out of the league so it’s a really good signing. When I met him I liked him, his determination and the way in which he wants to kick on with his career.

“He’s had quite a few loan moves but he wants to get settled.

“His work ethic means the fans will take to him straight away, he never gives defenders a minute and in terms of how I want to play that will help. He’s good with his back to goal. He gets a hold of the ball and keeps it for you in the last third, things I feel we needed to improve.”
