Rovers are keen to tie Marquis down to a new deal as he will enter the final year of his contract over the summer.

Speculation has grown about interest in the 24-year-old following his excellent campaign with Rovers.

But Ferguson is confident that is not a factor in the delay of Marquis signing a new contract, insisting he always knew it would not be the quickest negotiation process.

“We’re really close with it,” Ferguson told The Star.

“Negotiations have been going on for about a week.

“I’ve had a great chat with him on Monday.

“He’s had a great season, loved it. He really wants to stay.

“You’re always going to get a bit of interest in him.

“But it’s not an issue, we’ll get it done.

“It’s just a case of going through a couple more things with John.

“His was always going to take a bit longer but I’m 100 per cent confident we’ll get John done, no problem.”

Marquis himself has spoken publically about his desire to remain with Rovers after finding his feet at the club.

He said: “As far as I am concerned, I have a year left on my contract and hopefully they might want to sit down and sort a new one out, which would be nice.

“There is no reason I would be wanting to go anywhere else. My football has come on so much and I cannot speak highly enough of the manager and staff.

“I would probably go as far as to say that I have learned more in one year of football since Kenny Jackett left Millwall, which was maybe four years ago.”
