Rovers remained on 37 points - one place and two points above the League One drop zone - following Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Yorkshire rivals Bradford City.

In his post-match press conference, Ferguson made it clear to his players what they must do in the final ten games of the season to stave off relegation.

“Fifty points,” replied Ferguson, when asked about a points target.

“In the last five years 50 points has kept you up. So that’s four wins and a draw we need.

“It might go right to the wire,” he added.

“We’re on the worst run out of all of the teams in the league and I’m going to need some character [from my players].

“It’ll be hostile. The fans are not happy, understandably.”

Rovers, now without a win in 12 games, host a Peterborough side on Saturday who themselves have picked up just one point from their last seven matches.

They then face two teams currently in the bottom four, Colchester and Blackpool, over the Easter weekend.

Ferguson said: “It’s the worst run I’ve had as a manager and probably they’ve had as players.

“So you would expect the confidence isn’t great.

“But we just have to find a way of winning a game.

“I might have to look at something different next week, I’ll just have to keep trying different formations and different personnel.

“I went with a really attacking team [on Saturday] and still I didn’t think we had the quality at times to test their goalkeeper.”

Craig Alcock, Mitchell Lund and James Coppinger are all expected to return against Peterborough.

Conor Grant will be monitored this week after coming off on Saturday with a sore Achilles.
