Darren Ferguson says Doncaster Rovers friendly at York City was the closest test they will get to what they can expect from League Two this season.

Rovers triumphed 2-1 at Bootham Crescent courtesy of goals from Tommy Rowe and Matty Blair.

And while disappointed with some aspects of their play, Ferguson was largely pleased with the performance against the National League outfit.

"It was a good game for us," he said.

"I think, without playing a League Two team, that's as close as we're going to get to what we can expect over the next ten months.

"I knew it would be a good test for us and more of a test like what we're going to face.

"We've had Rossington and then Middlesbrough and Newcastle. York we'd pencilled in and I thought it would be as close as we're going to get.

"I just felt at times the basics we didn't do well enough, like the simple pass.

"We didn't get a flow to our game like I would have liked.

"Parts of it were good. I thought Matty Blair was very, very good. He showed the energy he's got and it was a good finish from him.

"Andy Butler was again superb at the back.

"The main thing for me was we won and we've got to get that winning mentality, going into every game thinking we want to win it."
