The Rovers boss is keen to get his business done early in the window and hopes to have funds in place to make a small number of quality additions to his squad.

“We’re having a meeting this week because it’s not far away and I don’t want to be leaving it until late January,” Ferguson told the Free Press. “I want to get it done as early as we can.

“My plans have been in place for a while.

“It won’t be four or five bodies coming in.

“We need to look and analyse the season so far and look at where we need to improve. It’s as simple as that.

“Then we look at positions we need to strengthen and try to get the right position in.

“I will say this, I won’t be bringing in people for the sake.

“Anyone I would try to bring in would have to be going straight into the team and being a starter.

“They would have to improve us.

“Whether we’ve got the scope for that, we’ll have to find out but I’m confident we will.”

As well as the small number of incomings, Ferguson admits players are likely to leave in search of game time.

And he has promised honesty with players who are unlikely to be in his plans beyond the end of the current season.

He said: “There will be some that need to play on a more regular basis.

“There are some that would be out of contract at the end of the season and need to play more regularly.

“There’s always got to be a bit of give and take.

“I’ve got to be fair to the players and give them my honest assessment going forward, not just for this season.

“I would have thought some of the younger ones would be going out and some of the more senior players as well.”
