Doncaster Rovers: Ferguson hints at more changes to come

And there could be plenty more changes on the way.

Boss Darren Ferguson has admitted that he wants to lower the average age of the Rovers squad and continue to put his own stamp on the club.

The January transfer window saw Jones and Richie Wellens - the two oldest members of the squad - moved on.

Harry Forrester, Jack McKay and Paul McKay also departed, while defender Gary MacKenzie joined Notts County on a month’s loan on deadline day despite a current shortage of fit centre backs.

Rovers face three consecutive derbies this month - starting with Saturday’s trip to Scunthorpe United - on the back of a five-game win-less run that has seen them slip to 16th in League One.

Following Tuesday night’s home defeat to Walsall, Ferguson was asked if he has a big re-building job on his hands this summer.

He replied: “I think there’s changes that need making. I think that’s obvious.

“We’ll continue working away at certain things within the football club that I want to change. It’s going to take time.

“What we’ve managed to do is have a really good positive impact when we first came in.

“We’ve lost a bit of that momentum but I do think a lot of that is down to the fact that four players came out of the team in one game [v Gillingham].

“I do think that’s had an impact.”

Andy Butler is set to return to the squad this weekend but Nathan Tyson remains a doubt and Conor Grant’s rib injury is more serious than first thought.

Rovers signed Port Vale goalkeeper Chris Neal on a month’s loan this week as cover for the injured Thorsten Stuckmann.
