Rovers will kick off their campaign at Accrington Stanley tomorrow as second favourites, behind Portsmouth, for the title.

Ferguson is fully aware of the expectations on him and his side but says it is vital that players and fans alike respect the division.

“We have to make sure we don’t underestimate the league. It’s going to be really tough,” Ferguson said.

“Also, and I hope they take this the right way, it’s important our supporters don’t underestimate the league.

“I hope they don’t think we’re just going to turn up and win games. It ain’t going to happen.

“We’re going to have some really tough games so we’ve got to make sure we have a bit of patience with everyone.

“Clearly the aim is to get promoted automatically, we know that. But it isn’t going to be easy.

“It’s important everyone - fans, players, everyone - realises that.

“Portsmouth are a very good example. There were parts of last season when they weren’t even in the play-offs.

“At times there’ll be games where we get frustrated at home.

“I’m not saying straight away we need the patience of the fans. We’re fully aware of what is expected of us this season.

“All I’m saying is that at times it’s not going to be easy. I hope people don’t think it’s just going to be a case of us turning up and winning 3-0 or 4-0.

“That’s not what this league is about. It’s going to be tough, physical and there’ll be teams getting right under our skin.”
