Doncaster Rovers: Every place is up for grabs insists McCann after Birmingham friendly

Grant McCann insists every position in his side is up for grabs as the season opener rapidly approaches for Doncaster Rovers.

McCann took half his squad to Friday night's friendly with Birmingham City, which ended in a 1-0 defeat at Solihull Moors.

And it appeared to be largely a second string side with new signings Mallik Wilks and Ali Crawford absent along with major players such as John Marquis and Andy Butler.

But after an impressive performance in defeat - delivered courtesy of an 87th minute strike from Che Adams - McCann said nothing had been decided in terms of his team to face Southend United on the opening day.

"Nothing has been decided," McCann said.

"You'll see the team, the lads will know the team for Southend on the Friday before we travel down.

"There's loads of time for people to change my mind and my opinion.

"Of course, like I've said before, I'll probably have a rough idea of eight or nine that are going to be in my team.

"But the lads have got an opportunity to change my mind.

"I told these boys that came to Birmingham that they've got two weeks to make sure they're in the team for Southend.

"I was really pleased with a lot of them in that game."

Tommy Rowe and James Coppinger both made their first appearances of pre-season after injury, playing 45 minutes each.

Rowe is likely to be handed 60 minutes against Grimsby Town on Tuesday, when the players who did not feature against Birmingham will start.
