The ball is in Curtis Main's court over whether he returns to Doncaster Rovers from survival rivals Oldham Athletic, Darren Ferguson has revealed.

Striker Main has entered the second month of his loan spell with Oldham - the side which currently occupies the final relegation slot in League One with Rovers sitting above them on goal difference alone.

And while Rovers are now in the period where they can make known their intention to recall the 23-year-old, an agreement between the three parties in the deal must be reached in order to see Main return to the Keepmoat.

"At the moment he's still there," Ferguson said.

"We've made an enquiry about possibly bringing him back but we've not had any decision on that.

"It's not just as simple as we want to bring him back. It has to be agreed by al parties.

"The lad wanted a clause in his deal that after 28 days if we wanted it, he could come back.

"Clearly now the decision is the boy either comes back or he doesn't.

"It would be his decision."

Main has made seven appearances for Oldham since moving to Boundary Park on loan in February. In contrast, he made just three appearances for Rovers under Ferguson in four months.

He has yet to score for the Latics but was praised by boss John Sheridan last weekend for the manner of his performance off the bench in the defeat to Sheffield United.

The Darlington-born forward played the full 90 minutes for Oldham in midweek as they beat fellow strugglers Blackpool to join Rovers on 37 points.

Ferguson admits he understands questions from supporters about why a Rovers player is potentially aiding a rival in the fight against relegation.
