Doncaster Rovers: Confidence is flowing for firing Andy Williams

When asked how far from his peak on-form Andy Williams is at the moment, the Doncaster Rovers striker was pretty blunt with his response.

“I don’t think I’m off my peak at the moment,” he said ahead of Saturday’s trip to struggling Fleetwood Town.

“I think 11 goals in 14 games, that’s not off peak for me.

“I’m quite happy with the way things are going.”

In fairness to the 29-year-old, it is hard to disagree with his confidence in his own abilities.

After a difficult first couple of months with Rovers, Williams has exploded and is certainly matching his performance at Swindon Town last season.

The Hereford-born striker is now on 14 goals for the season and has scored in nine of Rovers’ last 14 matches.

So, Williams cannot be too far off his targets for the current campaign.

“I do have goals but I don’t share them,” he said.

“It was a bit of a slow start so I’m a bit behind where I’d like to be.

“But there’s still 20 games left so I’m more than capable of hitting my target.

“I’m delighted with the way it’s gone. It was a slow start with only a few goals but thankfully I’ve turned that around.

“I was always confident when the chances started to come again that I’d find the back of the net.

“Thankfully it’s going really well for me in front of goal.”

Williams felt it was always likely to take time for him to settle at the Keepmoat, given Doncaster is the furthest place from home he has ever moved and the fact there was a delay before his wife and son joined him up north.

He said: “I’m three hours away from home, a lot further than I’ve ever been before so it was about getting settled here at first.

“I’ve got my wife and little boy with me now so I am settled and I’m happy.

“I think that shows on the pitch.

“It’s important. It’s as much a mental game as it is physical.

“I think you’ve got to be happy off the pitch to produce your best quality on the pitch.

“I’d like to think I’ve got it right at the moment.”

And that is a point worth being blunt about.a
