But Ferguson says the club’s leading marksman is in desperate need of a goal to reignite his goalscoring exploits.

Williams missed two excellent one-on-one chances at Rochdale on Saturday with the game at 0-0, stretching his barren run in front of goal to 14 matches.

But the 29-year-old has come in for praise from his boss for his workrate as Rovers desperately scramble for survival in League One.

“The last two games I think he’s played well,” Ferguson told The Star.

“He’s held the ball up a lot better, he’s been stronger.

“He won a lot of headers on Saturday and he gave us a real starting point.

“Clearly he needs that goal.

“They were two not bad saves on Saturday but Andy will feel he should’ve scored both when he’s clean through on the goalkeeper.

“To be fair to the boy, he doesn’t hide. I’ll give him that.

“He’s gone through a horrendous run and a loss of form but he doesn’t hide. He deserves full credit for that.”

Williams has scored 14 goals so far this term for Rovers, 11 of them coming in a 14 match spell. But he has not netted since the 2-2 draw with Gillingham on January 16.

n Rovers have extended their early bird season ticket deadline until May 9 in recognition of the uncertainty surrounding which division they will be in next season.

“On 9th May the club will then communicate Season Ticket and Matchday pricing for the 2016/17 season with the divisional status at the forefront of the decisions on the new pricing structure,” the club said on their website.
