Club captain Butler is hoping to maintain his ever-present record in League Two this season at Exeter City today despite suffering a major injury scare at Oldham Athletic last weekend.

The 33-year-old is a busy man off the pitch too, with an interest in coaching and involvement with the club’s academy.

And he says playing under Ferguson is proving to be beneficial in terms of both his playing and aspiring coaching career.

“I think the gaffer and Strachs [assistant manager Gavin Strachan] have improved me as a player - they aim to do that with every player,” said Butler in a recent interview with Rovers’ matchday magazine.

“I’ve learned a lot and now I’m trying to help with the under-12s in the academy and just watch little sessions that are put on.

“The gaffer came down and did an under 15 and under-16s session and that means a lot for the first team manager to come down and show the youngsters what the first team are doing.

“If you can’t learn from the gaffer then you won’t learn from anyone,” he added.

“He’s been there, seen everything and has got experience from being around his father and people like that so he’s learned a lot there.

“He’s brilliant, his demeanour and how he gets his point across is one of the most professional things I’ve seen in football.”

Butler trained on Thursday after recovering from his back injury at Oldham last week.
