Doncaster residents could see change on bin collections

The contract for the borough’s bin collections comes to an end this year - and bosses have drawn up a list of changes they want whoever gets the job to introduce.

If the demands are met, it would see new bins brought in for recyclable items, which is expected to end problems raised by residents regarding rubbish blowing out of boxes and onto the streets.

They would also look to transform Christmas collections.

But there could be a reduction in the items that can be recycled under the proposed changes.

Bosses have run a consultation exercise and have lined up its recycling boxes and Christmas collection arrangements as the top priority for whoever takes the job in October. But some food containers may no longer be taken for recycling.

Under proposals discussed at the top level at Doncaster Council, the top demand under a new contract will be an end to the green recycling boxes which the borough currently uses which have been criticised by residents.

Second on the list is a demand that firm arrangements for Christmas collections are put in place by the summer, to make sure they are well planned in advance. It may be accompanied by a suspension in green garden waste collections over the winter.

Under the deal the council wants, the green recycling boxes would be scrapped, and replaced by a wheelie bin with a lid. It would also contain segregated ‘caddies’ to allow for items to be separated within the bin.

The Council has an £8 million budget for the service and wants to sort out problems raised in the past.

The authority is looking to award the contract early in April. Cabinet member for environment, Coun Chris McGuinness, said: “We have asked the companies bidding to run our waste and recycling service to make sure that their applications include some crucial points.”
