Firefighters from Doncaster and Thorne were called out to Lindholme Prison, Bawtry Road, at around 8pm last night.

A South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokesman said: “The prisoner had barricaded himself in his cell by putting books and furniture up against the door, he’d then set fire to everything.

“When we got there, prison staff had managed to get him out of the cell and had made attempts to put the fire out. The inmate was unconscious.

“We went in to the cell to make sure the fire was out properly, it was still burning so we put it all out safely.

“I believe the prisoner was taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. We left at around 8.40pm.”
