Friends of Sandall Park, in conjunction with Doncaster Council, have managed to secure over £38,000 from charitable trust SUEZ Community.

An application was submitted for funding to extend the popular Woodland Adventure Play area to be installed in Sandall Park at a cost of £38,529. The bid was successful and the trust will cover the full cost.

Documents show council bosses described the sum as 'free money' and without the cash the project 'would not be possible'.

Ben Russell, an officer working within the regeneration and environment team, said: ""There are no other resources available so the scheme would have to be cancelled, and this would run contrary to considerable expectation from both the very active Friends Of Sandall Park group and senior management that the scheme will go ahead.

"The terms of the grant are very favourable, and give us an opportunity to do something that would not be possible otherwise.

"The impact of not taking this decision is negative in terms of turning away what is, essentially, ‘free money’ that would be used to enhance council owned open space and park lands.

"If we had been unsuccessful with the application then this expectation could have been managed, as we have been successful, not taking the scheme forward, it might appear to be a wilful rejection of a good opportunity to improve a very popular park used by tens of thousands of residents."
