Thompson, of Haggs Wood, Stainforth, was jailed at Sheffield Crown Court after pleading guilty to wounding.

A 26-year-old man arrested in connection to the incident was released under investigation as enquiries continue.Detective Constable Mark Jones, of South Yorkshire Police, said: "Thompson, who the victim knew through a mutual acquaintance, was arrested at the scene and we immediately began to build our case, gathering extensive forensic evidence from the scene. "I’m pleased that Thompson entered a guilty plea last week and the victim hasn’t been forced to recount what happened to her in court.

"I’d like to praise her for the courage she has shown throughout the investigative process, as we got the case to court.

"It was an horrific attack on an innocent woman who was enjoying her evening while her young son slept upstairs.

"She was left with a serious head injury which required an extensive recovery period and I’m pleased that she has recovered well and has seen Thompson jailed for his unforgivable actions."
