Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust (DCLT) is calling for more people to learn how to swim, offering a free swimming assessment for children as young as just six months old.

Through its Splash Academy Learn to Swim programme, DCLT is also offering any child who attends the lessons free swimming across its venues, including Amazonia Adventure at The Dome. Adult courses are also available.

Michael Hart, chief executive of DCLT, said: “As many of us prepare to head off on our summer holidays and look forward to enjoying the pool or the beach, it’s important to remember the need to ensure all members of the family are competent and confident in the water.

“There aren’t many sports that will save a life, but swimming is definitely one of them and so we want to raise awareness of the importance of learning how to be a competent swimmer at any age but particularly for children.”

According to the Child Accident Prevention Trust, in 2010, 28 children under the age of 15 drowned in the UK.

Michael, added: “We are doing all we can here at DCLT to help make parents aware of the need for their children to be fully equipped with the skills they need to swim confidently and stay safe in the water this summer.”

DCLT’s Splash Academy offers structured learning and follows the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) National Plan for Teaching Swimming. Lessons take place throughout the week across DCLT’s venues, including Thorne Leisure Centre, Adwick Leisure Complex, Dearne Valley Leisure Centre, The Dome, Rossington Community Swimming Pool, Edlington Leisure Centre, Askern Leisure Centre and Armthorpe Leisure Centre.

In addition to swimming lessons, DCLT also offers a vast range of swimming sessions and activities to suit all ages and abilities, including lane swimming, family sessions, fun sessions and pool-based fitness classes.
