Doncaster Knights: Injured Flockhart sets return date target

Injury looks set to rob Doncaster Knights star Dougie Flockhart of the chance to finish top points scorer in the Championship for the second season in succession.

The popular Scot, who was the top points scorer in the league at the time he got injured, faces at least another six weeks or so on the sidelines following surgery to repair the bicep he tore in the win over Rotherham Titans last month.

“It is disappointing but I try not to think about such things too much because when you are a goal-kicker you have ups and downs during a season so there are no guarantees,” he said.

Despite fears that the goal-kicking wing would be out for the rest of the season, Flockhart told The Star that he hopes to be back for the final home game against top-four rivals Bedford on April 16.

“It’s frustrating not being out there but it helps that I’m still involved due to my role as fitness coach and I’m concentrating my efforts on helping to make sure the boys are ready for the play-offs at the end of the season,” he said.

“I’m particularly concentrating on the players who aren’t starting at this moment in time but who are going to be vital for us during the run-in.

“With not having a game at the weekend we were able to give the players a bit of a break last week which came at a good time because playing on Ealing’s 3G pitch prior to the Carnegie game took a lot out of the players.

“A lot of the players were carrying soft tissue knocks in the Carnegie game from playing on such a hard surface.”
