“I’ve got a lot of emotions right now,” director of rugby Clive Griffiths told The Star.

“It was our main target this season so it’s rewarding that all the hard work put in by everyone, especially the players, has paid off and we’ve ticked that particular box.

“It’s another landmark for the club, following on from reaching last season’s B&I Cup final, and hopefully we can hang on to second place and challenge Bristol for top spot in the unlikely event of them slipping up in the run-in.”

He added: “A lot of pundits were predicting that we’d finish in the bottom three this year so it just shows how much they know.”

Reflecting on Saturday’s game, the Welshman said: “We didn’t get off to the best of starts and were 10-0 down, but the players picked themselves up off the floor and we led 14-10 at the break.

“They hit us with another unanswered ten points at the start of the second half and I wondered if this was to be the day our long unbeaten run in the league was going to come to an end. It might have done but for a magnificent tackle by Tyson Lewis at the end.

“But I thought we deserved to win because we showed all the qualities which have got us to where we are today.

“We scored from a catch and drive and also scored some real quality tries and were unlucky when Tyson had a try disallowed for a supposedly forward pass.”
