“It looked like we would pick up a bonus point win at half-time when leading 12-5 after playing into the wind, and then it looked as though we’d have to settle for a losing point and then we could have won it in the end,” said director of rugby Clive Griffiths reflecting on the 17-17 draw.

“So, as you can imagine, I went through a whole range of emotions during the game but at the end of the day I wouldn’t begrudge Ealing the two points and the two we picked up ensured that we remained in second place.

“We are disappointed not to have won but on the day we were below par – possibly the Rotherham game had taken it’s toll and the difference in atmosphere may also have contributed – but must overcome those sort of things if we want to stay in the top four.

“Ealing also played better than we’d expected. Not that we’d underestimated them because we knew that they have a lot of good players.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if they strung some results together and pulled away from the relegation zone.”

Skipper Michael Hills is expected to return to entertain Yorkshire Carnegie on Saturday.

But leading points scorer Dougie Flockhart will be out for around ten weeks after suffering a bicep injury against Rotherham.
